What is the Selective Placement Test? The NSW Selective Placement Test is a test held by NSW Department of Education. NSW Selective Schools (e.g. James Ruse Agricultural Highschool, Sydney Boys Highschool, Baulkham Hills Highschool) use the results of this test to determine which students they intake into their Highschool. The test is done by students when they are in Year 6 to allow entry into Selective Highschools in Year 7 the following year. Althought the majority of the admissions into Selective Highschools are chosen through the Selective Placement Test, it is not the only means of getting in. There are school specific admission criteria available for a limited number of students that are in Year 7 and above and wish to enter these schools. The Selective Placement Test usually happens in May, the 2024 Selective Placement Exam will be on the 4th of May 2023. However the application opening and closing dates occur towards the end of 2023, please keep up to date with the updates in the link below to ensure you apply by the deadlines. Why is the Selective Test so difficult? The Selective Placement Test isn't as difficult as it is different. The reason it seems hard for students as it is very unlike the content learnt in Year 5 and Year 6 and throws off the majority of students. The key is tonnes and tonnes and tonnes of practice questions day in day out to familiarise himself with all possible types of questions.
